ENGL 099-3 Components of Writing

In this introductory writing course, students develop strategies for managing academic reading and writing assignments. The course emphasizes the writing process: generating topics, drafting, revising and editing academic prose. Students receive one-on-one support throughout the writing process with special attention to writing conventions and the development of ideas. Critical reading and discussion skills are an integral part of this course. ENGL 099 is taught in a computer-mediated environment. Designed to prepare students for ENGL 131. Placement Criteria: ACT English score below 19; SAT English score below 450. If required, the course must be completed within your first year of studies at UCCS. The course is open to any student attending UCCS, or any other college or university.

NOTICE OF DISENROLLMENT
UCCS Students: if you received a postcard from the Office of Admissions and Records, directing you to this web page, you have been disenrolled from ENGL 131. You must therefore complete ENGL 099 (C- or better) or meet any one of the UCCS remediation requirements below, before you may resume the regular ENGL 131/141 sequence.

Per the UCCS Remediation Policy (revised July 1, 2004), the following conditions will satisfy the remediation requirement:

  • Successful completion of courses from other, regionally accredited, post-secondary institutions which are equivalent to either the CU Extended Studies remedial course or freshman level courses in English;
  • Examination of the high school transcripts of those who fail to meet the cut scores (see above) may occur. If this examination reveals that the student successfully completed four (4) semesters of college preparatory English, then it will be deemed that the student has demonstrated college level readiness and is not in need of remedial coursework;
  • Examination of prior academic work at the secondary or collegiate level and placement into appropriate college level coursework. Successful completion of college level course with final grade of 'C' or better satisfies the remediation requirement;
  • Earn an ACT English score of 19 or above by re-taking the ACT exam at the UCCS Counseling Center, 262-3257;
  • Earn placement into ENGL 131 with a writing sample if you have an English ACT score of 18 (contact the UCCS Writing Program at 262-4040).
