Library VPN for Windows 98

Note: when connected to this VPN server, the security restricts you from many other resources - remember to log out of VPN when you're finished.

Note: Although it's named Library VPN, this configuration is also used for other off-campus resources such as Human Resources and Financial Systems.

1. This may require the Windows 98 CD. Click on the Start button, go to Settings, and select Control Panel. Double-click on the Network icon. Click the Add button.

2. Click on Adapter and click the Add button.

3. Scroll down and click Microsoft in the left side of the window. Then click Microsoft Virtual Private Network Adapter in the right side. Click the OK button.

4. If the Select Network Component Type window (step 2 picture) is closed, click the Add button again.

5. Click on Adapter and click the Add button.

6. Scroll down and click Microsoft in the left side of the window. Then click Dial-Up Adapter in the right side. Click the OK button.

7. If the Select Network Component Type window (step 2 picture) is still open, click the Cancel button.

8. Click on TCP/IP - Dial-Up Adapter #2 (VPN Support). Then click the Properties button.

9. If you get a TCP/IP Properties Information window, click the OK button. On the TCP/IP Properties window, click the DNS Configuration tab. Click on each existing DNS number and click the Remove button. Click to place a dot to the left of Enable DNS. Type something in the Host: box. (It doesn't matter what you type, but it must have a name there.) Type uccs.edu in the Domain box. Click in the left side of the box below DNS Server Search Order. Type 128.198.1.250 and click the Add button. Now type 128.198.1.117 and click the Add button. Click the OK button.

10. Click the OK button on the Network window.

11. Click the Yes button to restart the computer if prompted.

12. Double-click the My Computer icon. Double-click the Dial-Up Networking icon. Double-click on Make New Connection.

13. This opens the wizard. Type "Library VPN" in the upper box. Click the down-arrow under "Select a device" and click on Microsoft VPN Adapter. Then click the Next button.

14. Type transporter.uccs.edu in the box and click the Next button.

15. Click the Finish button.

16. Double-click the My Computer icon. Double-click the Dial-Up Networking icon and select Properties.

17. Click the Server Types tab. Click the TCP/IP Settings button.

18. Ensure there is a checkmark in the box marked "Use default gateway on remote network". Click the OK button.

19. To use VPN, double-click the My Computer icon. Double-click the Dial-Up Networking icon.

20. Double-click on Library VPN.

21. Type ufp\ and your IT username and password as shown and click the Connect button.

22. To access the Library databases, start Internet Explorer. Go to http://web.uccs.edu/library. Click on the link to "Periodical Indexes by Name or Subject" or "Print and Electronic Journal Holdings".

23. When you're finished, double-click the My Computer icon. Double-click the Dial-Up Networking icon. Double-click on Library VPN. Click the Disconnect button.
