Creating Rules for Entourage 2004/2008

This help sheet will walk you through creating and applying rules for sorting e-mail inside of Microsoft Office Entourage 2004 and 2008. Rules can be useful for filtering out Spam and Junk e-mails.

1. Make sure that you're inside of you UCCS e-mail Inbox.
2. Select the Tools menu, then select Rules... In the next window, click the New button.

NOTE: Creating rules requires experimentation. If you are not getting the desired result from the first rule you create, you can modify it by adding to it or by creating an additional rule.

3. Under Rule name: type a name for your rule. In the If area of this window, you can choose the criteria for your rule. For the purpose of this tutorial, use the criteria provided.
  • A. Click on the Add Criterion button.
  • B. Drag down the first box and select Subject.
  • C. Drag down the second box and select Contains.
  • D. Type meet singles or anything you would like to be blocked from your e-mail.
4. In the Then area of the window, you can choose the action taken by your rule. For the purpose of this tutorial, use the criteria provided.
  • A. Click on the Add Action button.
  • B. Drag down the first box and select Move Message.
  • C. Drag down the second box and select the Spam_Trashcan folder under your UCCS e-mail.
    Adding bad e-mails to this folder will help the IT department keep track of spam sent to the University.
5. Make sure the Enabled check box is checked to activate the rule.
6. Click OK.
