Windows XP Setup for Dial-Up Access to UCCS

NOTE: You may need the Windows XP CD to complete this help sheet. After connecting successfully, you will be able to gain access to UCCS's computing resources such as:

  • E-mail
  • Internet
  • CyberClass
  • UCCS Library databases
  • UCCS IT user accounts

Adding a New Connection

1. Click on Start, then choose "Control Panel".

2. Choose "Network and Internet Connections".

3. Choose "Create a connection to the network at your workplace".

4. Click "Dial-up connection" and click Next.

5. Type UCCS in the Company Name field, and click Next.

6. Type in the phone number 5930109 and click Next.

7. Make this dial up access available to anyone on the computer, if you want to, then click Next.

8. Choose to add a shortcut to the desktop and click Finish.

Starting the Connection

9. You should have an icon on the desktop named UCCS. Double-click that icon.

10. Once the Connect to window comes up, there are two fields called User name: and Password:. Enter your IT account username and IT password. Now click on the Connect button. Dial-up Networking should dial the telephone number you entered and your modem will make the typical modem noises. If your computer connects successfully, it will acknowledge the connection. At this point you are connected to the UCCS campus network.

11. To access the internet, open a browser, such as Internet Explorer. NOTE: Internet Explorer comes with Windows XP. Click on the Start button, All Programs, and Internet Explorer. You should be able to start browsing web pages.

12. To access your email account, you need to open Internet Explorer and go to webmail.uccs.edu. Log in with your IT username and password. Complete Webmail instructions can be found at http://www.uccs.edu/helpdesk/webmail.htm

13. To access an IT account, click on the Start button and select Run. For your student account, type \\excelsior\students\first initial\your IT username and click the OK button; e.g. for Jane Doe, it would be \\excelsior\students\j\jdoe. For a professor's account, type \\enterprise\faculty\your professor's IT username and click the OK button; e.g. for John Smith, it might be \\enterprise\faculty\jsmith2. Information for download is normally found in a professor's Outbox. Documents to submit to a professor should be put in his/her Inbox.

14. To disconnect, double-click on the Connection icon (two little computers) in the right-hand corner of your task bar. Then click on the Disconnect button.
