Windows 95/98/Me Setup for Dial-Up Access to UCCS

Last Update: 7/29/05

NOTE: You may need the Windows 95/98/Me CD or floppies to complete this help sheet. After connecting successfully, you will be able to gain access to UCCS's computing resources such as:

  • E-mail
  • Internet
  • CyberClass
  • UCCS Library databases
  • UCCS IT user accounts

Dial-up Networking for Windows 95 Only

1. In order to connect to the campus network, Windows 95 users must install the Dial-Up Networking 1.3 Update. If you have internet access, you can find the update at http://download.microsoft.com/download/win95upg/Update/1.30/W95/EN-US/MSDUN13.EXE. Select the option to open the file from it's current location.

2. If you don't have an internet connection, you can obtain the update from the IT Help Desk. Make sure to bring two blank floppy disks with you. Once you obtain the files, copy both the files from the floppies and paste them to the same folder on your hard drive. In the folder that you put the files, double-click the icon named msdun.exe. (If extensions are not on, it will be just msdun.) A new window will appear. Click on the Extract button. An icon named msdun13.exe (or msdun13 if extensions are off) will appear in the same folder as you put the two files you copied from the floppies.

3. Double-click the icon to install the files needed by your computer. When it asks you to restart, select Yes. Once your computer restarts, you may be prompted to enter your Windows 95 disk.

Adding a New Connection

4. Double-click the icon on your desktop called My Computer.

5. In the resulting window, double-click on Dial-Up Networking icon.

6. From the Dial-Up Networking window, double-click on the Make New Connection icon.

7. From the Make New Connection window, type UCCS in the Type a name for the computer you are dialing box. Click on the Next button.

8. In the area code box, put in 719, or whatever is appropriate. In the Telephone Number box, enter 593-0109. Click the Next button and then the Finish button. You should now have a "UCCS" icon in your Dial-Up Networking window.

Adding DNS and WINS Numbers

Connecting to the Campus Network

13. Double-click on the UCCS icon from the Dial-Up Networking window.

14. Once the Connect to window comes up, there are two fields called User name: and Password:. Enter your IT account username and IT password. Now click on the Connect button. Dial-up Networking should dial the telephone number you entered and your modem will make the typical modem noises. If your computer connects successfully, it will acknowledge the connection. At this point you are connected to the UCCS campus network.

15. To access the internet, open a browser, such as Internet Explorer. NOTE: Internet Explorer comes with Windows 95/98/Me. Click on the Start button, Programs, and Internet Explorer. You should be able to start browsing web pages.

16. To access your email account, you need to open Internet Explorer and go to webmail.uccs.edu. Log in with your IT username and password. Complete Webmail instructions can be found at http://www.uccs.edu/helpdesk/webmail.htm

For your student account, type \\excelsior\students\first initial\your IT username and click the OK button; e.g. for Jane Doe, it would be \\excelsior\students\j\jdoe. For a professor's account, type \\enterprise\faculty\your professor's IT username and click the OK button; e.g. for John Smith, it might be \\enterprise\faculty\jsmith2. Information for download is normally found in a professor's Outbox. Documents to submit to a professor should be put in his/her Inbox.

18. To disconnect, double-click on the Connection icon (two little computers) in the right-hand corner of your task bar. Then click on the Disconnect button.
