Course Description: The course is designed for graduate students whose career or professional aspirations include active involvement in planning, directing and/or managing in the nonprofit sector. Importance will be placed on allowing each stud ent to apply, integrate, refine and share knowledge gained from academic study and professional experience.

Today's nonprofit sector is changing and complex and only recently has received serious academic analysis and review. This course will examine the principles and techniques of successful third sector management including the legal and political con text of nonprofit organizations, governance and policy making, strategic planning, human resource management, resource development, marketing, financial management, ethics, evaluation and accountability and managing change.

Students will be expected to prepare and present three short papers on selected management topics, do a technical assistance project with a nonprofit organization and actively participate in the course.

Readings and Classes: The texts provide a framework for the class and the supplemental readings add more detail about selected topics. Class sessions include instructor presentations, whole-class discussions and small group exercises. Activ e student participation is essential to the success of the course as a learning experience and class members are expected to come to classes having read and reflected about the material.

Grading: There are 60 points possible in the course as follows: papers, 30 points; project, 20 points; and class participation, 10 points. Since an effective nonprofit manager needs to be able to problem solve, write and present information, these skills will be stressed.
