Admission Requirements at The Graduate School of Public Affairs The Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree combines required core courses that provide a basic conceptual and theoretical foundation for public service with other required and elective courses.

Admission Requirements

  • Applicants must have completed a bachelor's degree from a college or university of accredited standing, with grades sufficiently high to indicate ability to pursue graduate work. The applicant may have majored in any field for the undergraduate degree.
  • Applicants for admission must submit three recommendations by qualified references that establish applicants' personal qualifications for graduate work. These recommendations can be submitted on official forms available at the Graduate School of Public Affairs. Forms may be completed by professors,supervisors, and/or others who are acquainted with the prospective student's work.
  • All applicants submit scores from the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination. Students may contact the Graduate School of Public Affairs for details about test dates and locations.
  • Applicants should submit all admissions materials by June 20 for the fall semester, November 28 for the spring semester, and April 24 for the summer term.
  • Students who have missed the deadline for the upcoming semester may register as nondegree students. Up to twelve credit hours taken in the program as a nondegree student may be applied to the master's degree program with approval of an advisor.

    Who Should Enroll in the Graduate School of Public Affairs?

    The Graduate School of Public Affairs attracts two types of students -- mid-career public and nonprofit sector professionals who wish to advance their careers or sharpen their skills, and persons who contemplate careers in public service positions. In particular, the following types of persons will benefit from this program:

  • People now working in public and nonprofit positions who wish to more fully develop their potential for executive leadership.
  • People who plan to pursue careers as managers in the public and nonprofit sectors or as elected officials.
  • People working in private sector organizations who have substantial contact with or are regulated by the public sector.
  • People who are not degree-bound but who want to develop specific job-related skills or expertise, or who wish to pursue one of the Certificate programs.
  • People who eventually wish to pursue a Ph.D. in Public Administration.

    Transfer of Credit

    Up to twelve semester hours of appropriate graduate work from an accredited college or university may be credited toward the master's degree in public administration. All transfer work must be approved in writing by the Dean of GSPA.
