EDUCATION:
Ph.D. , Communication, University of Colorado at
Boulder, 1983.
M.A., English, Western New Mexico University, Silver City, New Mexico,
1964.
B.A., English, Western New Mexico University, Silver City, New Mexico,

RESEARCH INTERESTS:
Intercultural communication related to indigenous
minorities--Hispanics, Native Americans, and African Americans.
A topic of interest which I would like to develop for
presentation could be broadly entitled "Aging and Ethnicity: Social
Problems and Concerns."
ONGOING PROJECTS:
Presently involved in a research project with other
members of the
department entitled "Women Leaders Across Cultures: New Leadership
Paradigms." In the context of this project, we are interviewing
minority
women who are in formal or informal leadership positions and who
contribute to family, their work, their communities, and societies in
general. We have found that little has been done in studying how these
women’s leadership styles have developed and who influenced and/or
mentored them.
In terms of aging related projects, I have been involved
in several capacities
with the Alzheimer’s Disease Association in Denver for several years. My
main interest has been in working with issues related to minorities
particularly with Hispanics who do not speak English. They experience a
host of problems in dealing with health care professionals who speak only
one language and do not understand, much less recognize the cultural
differences which can influence the care given to a Hispanic elder.
