Learning From Experience

- Lahars elsewhere ...
- The 1991 eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in the
Philippines deposited a large volume of loose pyroclastic
material on the volcanos steep slopes. The loose
material and the heavy rainfall in the Philippines
generated hundreds of lahars, some of which have been
enormous. Timely evacuation meant that only a few
hundred people were killed directly by the 1991 eruption.
Far more have been killed or injured by lahars
since then. These lahars will continue to be a problem
for decades (Volcano World).
