About the JTA Program

Being a Junior Teaching Assistant is a wonderful leadership opportunity, and it looks GREAT on your resume when you graduate! As a JTA, you would be expected to participate each week in your Freshman Seminar class session, to assist your professor, and to meet with your students during the course. Being a JTA is an important job; your freshmen will need your support and encouragement, and they'll look up to you as a role model during their first semester. You can probably remember how you felt when you began college. There is no doubt that Freshman Seminar makes a difference in students' college careers and in their lives. As a Junior Teaching Assistant, you'll have a chance to play a role in that process!

Since our Freshman Seminar students will arrive early, ID 409 will begin before the semester starts, meeting from Monday, August 14 through Friday, August 18, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. On the first day, we will talk about teaching and learning, about how to motivate freshmen, and about your role in Freshman Seminar. At noon faculty and JTAs will all gather for lunch. You will work with your faculty team after lunch, and then return to ID 409 afterwards for some final preparations. On Thursday and Friday, you will be working with your new freshmen during PREVIEW DAZE.

If you are selected as a Freshman Seminar JTA, you must register for ID 409: Peer Mentoring for Freshman Seminar Junior Teaching Assistants. JTAs will receive three hours of upper division credit, along with three hours of free accompanying in-state tuition, for ID 409. As Freshman Seminar continues during the semester, you will also meet with your students during your topic group's regular Freshman Seminar sessions. So when you register for classes, you must keep these this time block open.
