Events Center Update posted 11/10/08
As the activity on the Events Center moves forward there will be a major change in how the excavation takes place. Please note the contractor’s intentions as indicated below. This change, as the installation of the soldier beams and tie backs moves around to the “front” of the building, is necessary in order to finish the excavation of the site.
We will be drilling the last 12 soldier beams this week weather permitting. This will include the beams that are along the fire lane. We hope to also do our 1st set of tie backs this week starting in the Northwest corner. Mid-week we plan to remove the ramp from Mountain Lion down into the site, this has been our main truck route so far. With the removal of the ramp all of our truck traffic will be coming and going via the fire lane in front of Dwire Hall. If you have any comments or concerns please feel free to give me a call.

The Fire Lane (the main sidewalk) will be open on Friday morning for Pedestrian traffic so that we can roof the covered walkway. The Fire Lane will be open for the weekend but closing again on Monday.
The emergency exit from the gym will be open as of about 2:00pm today.
As I’m sure everybody has noticed the drilling operation hasn’t gone as far as we hoped to date. We will be drilling the East side soldier beams down the slope starting next week. By mid week we are planning to start the 1st 5’ excavation for shotcrete for the shoring system. This will mean more truck traffic on Mountain Lion and in front of Dwire Hall.
I know that these activities will be disruptive to the campus. We will make every attempt to minimize the impact, however these activities will be intrusive.
Thank you in advance for your patience during this period.

As the Events Center construction quickly moves into high gear it will become more intrusive in the campus. We will be working to minimize, as much as possible the impact, however the initial operation to place the shoring wall will require extensive equipment and material in and around the site.
Also, as noted in an earlier email, the fence will be expanding across the walkway leading from the University Center up the hill towards Dwire. The contractor will be providing a covered walkway for pedestrian traffic. Vehicular traffic requiring access to the UC Upper Plaza will need to coordinate with Facilities Services for access.
What you will be seeing next:
The 1st delivery of Soldier Beams will be tomorrow, Friday October 10, 2008. The drill rig will be delivered on Monday October 13, 2008 with the start of drilling on Tuesday morning October 14, 2008.
The sequence of installation will be starting next to the University Center with the contractor drawing beam number 1 and continuing in numerical order to the east towards Dwire.
After the 1st day of drilling the contractor will know how many holes on the average can be installed per day. The hope is to be all the way to the beam in the northeast corner of the site (near Dwire) by the end of the week.

The Events Center Construction continues to move forward. The excavation contractor will be staging equipment over this weekend (Oct. 4 & 5)and will start the excavation of the “hill” on Monday. The excavation will start on the Mountain Lion Way side of the “hill.” We will also be coordinating with the excavation company the relocation of the last three trees on the site.
The fence will remain basically in its current position through Monday, October 13. On the 13th or 14th the contractor will start to relocate the fence crossing the main path from the University Center to Dwire. They will be constructing a covered walkway to provide passage along the edge of the construction site next to the Contemporary Art building and along the edge of the path towards Dwire. I’ve attached a diagram roughly showing the location of the fence and covered walkway (shown in orange). The fence will have gates on the walkway to allow emergency access for fire trucks. They will also be placing a fence around the north side of the Science Building to provide working space for construction.
