GENERAL QUESTIONS

What is the Undergraduate Research Forum?

The Colorado Springs Undergraduate Research Forum (CSURF) is held in conjunction with the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, the United States Air Force Academy and Colorado College. The event gives undergraduate students from all three institutions the opportunity to present their research and creative work in a formal academic setting and receive feedback from scholars and peers across the disciplines. The CSURF also helps students to polish the skills involved in formal presentation, job interviews, or continuing education through graduate/professional study.

What is a poster session?

Students who choose to participate in a poster session will be required to create a full-size (36 inches high x 48 inches wide) poster detailing their research. Posters will be placed in an open forum for roughly 1 hour during the event (typically there are 2-3 separate poster sessions during the Forum). During the hour long time slot, students will stand next to their poster and answer questions from other students and faculty members in attendance.

PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENT QUESTIONS

Who may participate in the Undergraduate Research Forum?

The CSURF is open to all undergraduate students from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, the United States Air Force Academy and Colorado College. Typically, student participants are in their 3rd or 4th year of university study (although class standing is not a requirement for participation).Colorado Springs Undergraduate Research Forum (CSURF): Presenter Suggestions

When Should I arrive for my presentation and session?

You should arrive 15 minutes before the start of your session so as not to inconvenience the other students and faculty members who are participating in your session. Presenters should also stay for the entirety of their session.

It is also highly recommended that you attend as much of the conference as possible to participate in the exchange of ideas and support your fellow presenters. We recommend you review the conference program and attend panels and poster sessions of interest. Watching and analyzing how others organize and present their research is an interesting and informative way to improve your own organization and presentation skills.

Do I have to stay at the event all day?

We highly recommend it. Much of the value added from attending research conferences comes from exchanging ideas with colleagues in fields related to yours. We recommend you review the conference program and plan to attend panels and poster sessions that overlap with your own interests or that simply intrigue you. Watching and analyzing how others organize and present their research is also an interesting and informative way to improve your own organization and presentation skills.

What if I am late to my presentation or poster session?

If you are late to your presentation or poster session, you may not be able to present. This decision will be made at the discretion of the chair of your session. . You are required to arrive early for your presentation so as not to inconvenience the other students and faculty members who are participating in your session. Presenters should plan to stay for their entire session.

Can I bring family and friends to my presentation?

Yes.

What if an emergency occurs that prevents my attendance?

Can I do a poster session and an oral presentation?

No. You will be required to choose either a poster session or an oral presentation, but not both.

Can I do multiple oral presentations?

No. You are allowed to do only 1 oral presentation (roughly 20 minutes in duration) or one poster session, but not both.

Can I extend the length of my presentation to two normal time slots (40 minutes)?

No. All oral presentations will be no more than 20 minutes in length.

What is an abstract and how do I write one?

Consult your faculty mentor for an appropriate abstract submission. An example of an abstract may be found at http://www.uccs.edu/csurf/abstracts.htm.

Where is the Undergraduate Research Forum?

The 2008 CSURF will be held at the United States Air Force Academy.

What is the dress code for the Forum?

The dress code for the Forum is business casual.

What are the required dimensions for posters at the Undergraduate Research Forum?

The required poster dimensions are 36 inches high x 48 inches wide.

How should I bring my PowerPoint presentation to the Forum?

Your Power Point presentation may be burned to a CD or brought to the Forum on a memory stick. You may want to bring a back-up copy of your presentation in case anything goes wrong.

What if I require additional equipment for my presentation?

If you require additional equipment for your presentation (such as a slide projector, DVD/VCR, etc.) you may specify this on your application.

Will there be tape, tacks, etc. onsite for poster session presenters?

The event will run from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Is lunch free for all presenters and faculty mentors?

Yes.
