Former Mayor to Teach at UCCS
By Crystal Ovitt, January 28, 2004

Former Mayor Mary Lou Makepeace will teach two courses this spring semester at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs - Politics and Policy in State and Local Communities and Urban Politics. For the State and Local course, Ms. Makepeace will use the 2003 edition of Colorado’s Government authored by the late Dr. Robert S. Lorch and published by the Center for the Study of Government and the Individual.

Ms. Makepeace served on the Colorado Springs City Council from 1985-1997 then as its mayor from 1997-2003 and is an active community member. She is an adjunct professor at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and the Center for Creative Leadership. She is also the co-director of the Stratton Youth Leadership Program. Ms. Makepeace served as Executive Director for Leadership Pikes Peak and currently serves as Program Facilitator to the LPP Class of 2004. Ms. Makepeace was recently appointed as the new Executive Director of The Gay and Lesbian Fund for Colorado, a philanthropic organization that donates money to nonprofit organizations within the community.

She brings a unique perspective to the courses with her 20+ years experience in government in the area of local government and her formal education. She holds a Masters in Public Affairs from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. We welcome Ms. Makepeace back to the UCCS community.
