The National Conference in
Colorado Springs was convened in 2006 to bring together various
experts and stakeholders in the field of geropsychology to formulate
a training model. One of the
most exciting outcomes of the National Conference was the decision
to form a council, CoPGTP, to focus on geropsychology training and
provide resources for programs and individuals seeking training in
the field.
As of 2007, the CoPGTP is incorporated as a nonprofit corporation in California,
and has been recognized as a tax exempt nonprofit by the IRS. The
first board of directors was elected, and it met during APA's annual
meeting in San Francisco (2007). The first meeting for all members
was held at the 2008 APA meeting in Boston.
Definition: Professional geropsychologists are psychologists
with knowledge, skill, training, and experience related to the aging
process who specialize in assessment and intervention with older
persons. The geropsychologist(s) affiliated with a professional
geropsychology training program should themselves have been trained
in a program that is recognized as providing training in core
elements of geropsychology at one or more of the following levels of
training: graduate school, internship, and/or post-doctoral level.
At the Membership Committee's discretion a combination of
independent learning experiences and 5 years practice in an applied
geropsychology setting may substitute for this requirement.
