WHAT TYPES OF WORKSHOPS ARE AVAILABLE?
Available communication-related topic workshops offered to faculty members are as follows:

  • ASSERTIVENESS

 

  • COMMUNICATION APPREHENSION
    This is a workshop designed to help participants understand communication apprehension and how it affects their interpersonal and public communication.   Activities are included to assess individual apprehension, and develop strategies to overcome their apprehension.
  • CONFLICT MANAGEMENT
    This is a workshop designed to introduce productive conflict management strategies and identify personal conflict profiles.  Activities are included to define conflict, assess each participant's conflict management style, and improve their skills.
  • INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION
    This is a workshop designed to enhance and develop participants' intercultural communication skills by defining culture and ethnicity and outlining barriers to effective intercultural communication such as ethnocentrism, stereotyping, and prejudice.  Activities are included to identify both verbal and nonverbal differences and reduce uncertainties that could lead to misunderstanding or conflict.   If requested, role-playing exercises can be video-taped for skill development and assessment.
  • JOB INTERVIEWING SKILLS
    This is a workshop designed to enhance and help participants develop skills in employment interviews by outlining the purposes of job interviews, identify the characteristics that employers seek in applicants, and illustrate the three stages in preparing for an interview.  Activities are included to demonstrate positive and negative interviewing behaviors, outline typical interview questions, and provide training in interviewing skills.  If requested, role-playing exercises can be video-taped for skill development and assessment in interviewing.
  • LISTENING SKILLS
    This workshop is designed to help participants improve their ability to listen while focusing on the difference between active listening and hearing information without full comprehension.  Activities are included to assess listening skills, motivate for better listening habits, and provide training in essential listening skills.  If requested, role-playing exercises can be video-taped for assessment of individual listening abilities.
  • ORAL COMPETENCY IN PRESENTATIONS
    This workshop is designed to assist professional work groups in developing effective presentations by clarifying the specific purpose of the presentation, detailing the responsibilities of the presenter and other group members, conducting audience analysis, organizing information, preparing and utilizing visual aids, implementing smooth transitions between segments, developing guidelines for delivery, and handling question/answer sessions.  If requested, activities can be incorporated to facilitate group planning and tips for handling public speaking anxiety.
  • TEAM BUILDING FOR GROUP PROJECTS
    This workshop is designed to promote effective team functions by highlighting the importance of teamwork in achieving a vision and goals, and identifying the dynamics and processes of an effective team experience.  Activities are included that define teamwork and the characteristics of an effective team and develop team vision, goals and roles as team members.  The workshop is highly interactive; therefore, it is most effective in longer time frames.
