~ Background Information ~

Dr. Sherwyn Morreale is the Director of Graduate Studies in Communication for the Communication Department. Dr. Morreale's  main research and teaching interests include instructional communication, public speaking, interpersonal and gender communication, diversity issues, organizational communication, and the assessment of communication competence. Her research has appeared in The Basic Communication Course Annual, Communication Education, The Communicator, Education, the Journal of the Association for Communication Administration, and The Successful Professor. She is the lead author of two communication textbooks, Human Communication: Motivation, Knowledge, and Skills and Excellence in Public Speaking. She also has authored numerous articles and chapters for collected volumes and special monographs in the communication discipline including, most recently, a Handbook for Graduate Students in Communication published by the National Communication Association. Currently, she is working on a new public speaking textbook, a volume on trust in organizations, and the latest iteration of a national survey of the basic communication course.

From 1997-2005, Dr. Morreale served as the Associate Director of NCA, the oldest and largest association of professors in the communication discipline in the world. In her position at NCA, she was responsible for communication instruction and research initiatives and outreach on behalf of the communication discipline to funding agencies, policy makers, and other private and public audiences. Prior to 1997, she taught in the UCCS Communication Department and directed the
activities of the Center for Excellence in Oral Communication on the UCCS campus.

Her educational background includes three communication degrees: B.A., University of Colorado-Colorado Springs; M.A., University of Colorado-Denver; and the Ph.D., University of Denver.

When not at work, Dr. Morreale enjoys hiking and aerobics, and pursuing the arts as an observer - music, theater, and art gallery openings. Dr. Morreale spends much time with her family - son Jesse Morreale who lives in Denver; and daughter Samantha M. Klingenberg and son-in-law, Steve Klingenberg who live in Colorado Springs. She is particularly proud of her two grandsons - Samantha and Steve's offspring - Zachary and Vanden Klingenberg, who it should be noted
attended two academic conferences before the age of six months.
