Oaxaca Study and Culture Tour June 5-12, 2010

About

It is becoming increasingly important that educators understand the Latino culture and be able to communicate with Spanish-speaking students, their families, and their community. UCCS is offering a course in 2010 that will provide the opportunity to learn Spanish and to earn graduate credits while travelling in Mexico.

Students will have the opportunity to:

  • Use Spanish in real-life situations, such as bargaining for purchases or buying food
  • Travel to Mexico to study first-hand the Latino culture

Course Description

Course: Travel to Mexico

This 4 credit course consists of a 7-day trip to the city of Oaxaca in southern Mexico with the primary objective being a greater understanding of true Mexican culture. This lovely colonial town is also home to many of Mexico’s indigenous peoples.

It is a place of fascinating contrasts: amazing beauty and extreme poverty.

There will also be a focus on the education structure in Mexico, allowing for discussions related to the issue of Mexican immigration in the United States.
