Course Description

Course: Travel to Italy

This course will consist of a 7-day trip to the land-locked, mountainous region of Umbria, located southeast of Tuscany and 3 ½ hours northeast of Rome.  This less-traveled tourist area will enable participants to experience the “local flavor” of Italian culture which is so rich in art, history and cuisine.  The primary objective is a cultural immersion to promote language acquisition, assimilation, historical knowledge and social interaction.  Although we will spend some time in the amazing, but hectic, big city of Rome, most of the activities will take place in the scenic countryside visiting medieval villages and towns, spiritual churches, archaeological ruins, art history and agricultural venues.  Perugia, famous as a university town, is the capital of Umbria, and we will stay in the historic downtown centre within walking distance to all of the major sites.  Several social opportunities are scheduled to allow interaction with university students and professors, in addition to owners of an olive orchard and wine vineyard/cellar. The highlight of any international trip is “getting to know the locals”, and this course will focus on the lifestyle and traditions of this distinctive region of Italy.

Course Activities

  • Tour Rome, Perugia, Assisi, Spello, Trevi, Montefalco and Spoleto
  • Visit churches and Cathedrals
  • See the Piazza Navona and the Pantheon
