An official opening of the $40 million Daegu English Village drew
dignitaries from throughout Korea and from UCCS Oct. 30. A Nov. 12 campus event is planned to
celebrate the first collaborative effort between Korean and American universities to create a
full-scale immersion experience in American culture. (MORE)
Lindy Crawford was recently appointed to the Professional Advisory Board of the
National Center for Learning Disabilities. Board members meet once annually in the city of New
York and contribute their time throughout the year to work on various projects related to the

The College of Education received the 2007 Community Service Award from the Autism Society of America and the Pikes Peak region. The award was accepted on behalf of the College of Education by Dr. Lindy Crawford.

Randall L. DePry, Ph.D. (Department of Special Education) was re-elected to serve as a
member of the APBS Board of Directors by this international organization's
membership. Dr. DePry currently serves as the Secretary of APBS and was elected to serve on the
board in March 2005. The mission of APBS states that "The Association for
Positive Behavior Support (APBS) is an international organization dedicated to promoting
research-based strategies that combine applied behavior analysis and biomedical science with
person-centered values and systems change to increase quality of life and decrease problem
behaviors. The Association is made up of professionals, family members, trainers, consumers,
researchers, and administrators who are involved and interested in positive behavior

La Vonne I. Neal, Dean of the College of Education, presented a keynote address at the
George C. Marshall JROTC Leadership Symposium on October 11, 2007 in Lexington, Virginia. Her
address was titled, "The Legs of JROTC Leadership: Character and Service."

La Vonne I. Neal, Dean of the College of Education, presented an all-day
"Teachers' Workshop on Culturally Responsive Teaching" at the 92nd Annual
Conference of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) on
October 4, 2007 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Social Studies teachers from the
Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District, one of the largest school districts in North Carolina and
other conference participants attended the workshop.

In collaboration with the University of Colorado Foundation and the College of Education, this endowed professorship honors not only Dr. Swaby, but the individual who will hold this position.

Dr. La Vonne I. Neal, Dean of the College of Education, presented a keynote address at the Colorado ACT Annual Conference.
La Vonne I. Neal, Dean of the College of Education, presented a keynote address at the
Colorado ACT Annual Conference on Friday, September 7, 2007. The title of her keynote address
was, "Partners in Education: Moving from Vision to Action." Dean Neal presented new
research-based initiatives in colleges of education to prepare administrators, counselors, and
teachers to meet the needs of students in the 21st century. Specific strategies such as
"culturally responsive teaching and counseling" were illuminated to help partners in
education move from intention to action.

Randall L. De Pry, Department of Special Education, presented at the 3rd Annual
Colorado Positive Behavior Support Symposium on July 24-25, 2007. His presentation topics
included: Effective Instructional and Behavioral Feedback within a PBS School and Students with
Chronic or Persistent Challenging Behavior: Providing Differentiated Support that Promotes
Learning and Inclusion. As a member of the State Leadership Team for the Colorado School wide.
Positive Behavior Support Initiative, Randy joined with his colleagues in welcoming John H.
Hager, Assistant Secretary, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services, U.S.
Department of Education to the conference. Assistant Secretary Hager and Anne Todd from the
Office of Special Education Program's Technical Assistance Center on Positive Behavior
Supports and Interventions met with the State Leadership Team and discussed current and future
directions for PBS implementation in the state of Colorado. For the2007-2008 academic year 510
schools from all eight regions of Colorado will be implementing school-wide PBS.

Dr. Lindy Crawford, assistant professor and chair of the Department of Special
Education at UCCS, will be presenting findings of a recent report she authored on the testing
of students with disabilities to the Senate Democratic Steering Committee in Washington D.C. on
July 13, 2007. Dr. Crawford, along with a team of researchers and special education advocates,
will conduct two briefings. The objective of the briefings is to contribute to ongoing
discussions concerning the reauthorization of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.
The report titled, State Testing Accommodations: A Look at their Value and Validity, can be
found on the National Center for Learning Disabilities website: http://www.ncld.org. The report
investigates the variability of test accommodations across states on large-scale tests of
student achievement.

Congratulations to Drs. Cheesman, Crawford, and De Pry of the
Department of Special Education for their recent publications in the 3rd Edition of the
Encyclopedia of Special Education. The Encyclopedia of Special Education is a 3 volume, 2100
page work that is considered to be the preeminent reference work in field of special education
and is found in libraries around the world. Dr. De Pry also served as a contributing editor for
the encyclopedia editing over 100 entries on topics such as applied behavior analysis, positive
behavior support, and emotional and behavioral disorders.

Building English Learners. Think the Austin Bluffs are the only place where UCCS is building? Go east. Way east. The Daegu English Village in South Korea is taking shape and will offer English as a Second Language programs as well as weekend family experiences and English experience programs. The UCCS College of Education joined with Yeunghin College to create the site and to build its curriculum. [ more ]

Drs. Randall De Pry and Gerry Olvey from the Department of Special Education were appointed to the Program for Licensing Assessment for Colorado Educators (PLACE) Content Advisory Committee for the Special Education Generalist PLACE Test. The first meeting was held in Denver on February 7, 2007 and sponsored by the National Evaluation Systems (NES) and the Colorado Department of Education (CDE).

Congratulations to Dr. Rhonda Williams who was just named this year's recipient of the annual UCCS COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD. The campus is invited to attend this year's Campus Awards Ceremony on May 1, 2007 at 3:30 pm in the Dusty Loo Bon Vivant Theatre in University Hall where Dr. Williams' award will be presented.

Welcome back Dr. Fennel! David Fenell is a Colonel in the US Army Medical Service Corps Reserve. He has been on military leave from the Department of Counseling and Human Services until January 2007. Colonel Fenell recently completed a tour in Iraq, serving as the Command Psychologist for the Joint Special Operations Task Force. He performed both clinical and tactical psychology missions.
