As an instructor in the Special Education Department, Laura coordinates student teaching, teaches the Self-Determination Transition class and Direct Instruction Practicum in Math, and co-teaches a Freshman Seminar.

Laura Marshall's research interest is in helping individuals, especially those with disabilities, live more self-determined lives. She has worked in the UCCS Self-Determination Projects and coordinated four federally funded grants. In these projects she has co-authored several sets of lessons:

ChoiceMaker Self-Determination Transition Curriculum
- providing self-determination for transitioning youth.
Choose and Take Action Transition Software and Lessons
- for students with significant support needs.
Choice Making for Elementary Students Curriculum
- embeds self-determination skills in standards based instruction.

Laura has conducted training workshops and presentations on self-determination and transition instruction and has had the opportunity to assist teachers in establishing transition programs for students with high and low incidence disabilities.

Currently she is helping coordinate the Teacher Cadet UCCS Alliance. The purpose of the project is to encourage outstanding students to enter and complete the undergraduate teacher education and special education programs at UCCS and to return to area schools to teach.

Prior to her university appointment she taught in public and private schools and adult service agencies with individuals with a variety of disabilities.

Teaching

Student Teaching and Internship

Student teaching and internship are the culminating field experiences for the UCCS special education licensure program in which students have the opportunity to work in a variety of settings with K12 students with the full range of abilities and ages required for the generalist licensure. In these experiences the students will demonstrate proficiency in the required program competencies in educational settings that utilize practices congruent with the UCCS special education program.

Self-Determination and Transition

This course presents the transition process from school to adult life, self-determination, and the development and implementation of self-management instructional programs for students. Service delivery models, issues, and intervention approaches are examined. Emphasis is upon using self-management and learning strategies to facilitate student self-determination and successful transitions, and to show how both students and teachers can become leaders and lifetime learners. Class activities demonstrate how these concepts can be infused into general and special education curricula and instruction.

Direct Instruction Practicum in Math

The purpose of Practicum is for students to learn effective teaching behaviors (e.g., pacing, transitions, data collection, correction procedures, organization of classroom materials, behavior management, professional disposition) that can be generalized to a variety of settings and to demonstrate proficiency in the planning, delivering, and evaluating math instruction.
