Dr. Carpenter serves as an associate professor of educational leadership at the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs. His research interests include educational policy, leadership, communications, and the U.S. Presidency. Prior to service at UCCS, Dr. Carpenter worked as a policy analyst, principal, and teacher.

Dr. Carpenter's research interests and publications center on educational leadership and policy. Using both qualitative and quantitative approaches, his projects include examinations of leadership and communication, achievement gaps, and school reform. His work has been featured in academic venues such as Educational Forum, Phi Delta Kappan, the Journal of School Public Relations, and highlighted in newspapers and magazines, such as The Rocky Mountain News, Education Week, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and The Washington Times.

Introduction to Research and Statistics
This course examines concepts and skills related to educational measurement, research design, statistics, and quantitative and qualitative methods of research.

LEAD 525
Creative Communication for Leaders
In this course students learn various strategies for effective organizational and interpersonal communication. Criteria for effectiveness in verbal and written communication are examined. Emphasis is placed on the role of creativity in communication for leaders.

LEAD 700
Masters Research Lab
This course is designed to assist students in the development of technical skills in the areas of tests and measurements, technology, and research necessary for successful leadership in schools.

Scholarship

Current projects include research on student achievement in charter schools, leadership in the U.S. presidency, and public opinion on education.
