General Information

Welcome to the Superintendent Licensure Program at University of Colorado at Colorado Springs! In just one year, you can complete the requirements to become eligible for a Colorado Administrator License.

As an active participant in this program you will:

  • Develop as a leader through an expanded self knowledge and world view.
  • Learn how to guide an educational team as they integrate recommendations from research with an assessment of the needs of a school community and create a plan for student success.
  • Explore the political and social implications of schooling and the educational requirements of a diverse, democratic, multicultural society.
  • Discover how technology can be utilized to enhance management and communication.
  • Enhance your ability to ignite and inspire others!

Admission Requirements

If you already hold a Master's Degree from an accredited institution and a Colorado Principal License, or have completed a Master's Program and an approved program for principal preparation, your Administrator Licensure program will consist of nine semester hours during a one-year intensive. When you complete this program you will be eligible for the Colorado Administrator License.

Required Coursework

Students complete three courses (nine semester hours total) in a one-year format, with a cohort of other educators. The curriculum has been developed on a foundation of research in the areas of leadership, management, schooling, curriculum, instructional practices, adult development, and technology. It has been aligned with the requirements of the Colorado Commission on Higher Education, the Colorado standards for principal and administrator licensure, the ELCC Standards, and the AASA Standards for Superintendents. Course content is based upon Colorado Licensure Standards for administrators, NCATE curriculum standards and the AASA professional standards for the superintendency.

LEAD 686 - 3 credit hours

The Superintendent as a Transformational Leader
(Fall semester)

This course will prepare students to:

  • Shape school culture and climate.
  • Provide purpose and directions for individuals and groups.
  • Relate political initiatives to the welfare of children.
  • Understand and model appropriate value systems, ethics, and moral leadership.

LEAD 687 - 3 credit hours

Superintendent as Manager of Quality Systems
(Spring semester)

In this course, students will:

  • Determine methods by which systems can be continuously improved.
    Understand variation in systems.
    Understand stability, capability, and prediction of systems.
    Clarify the aims of systems.

LEAD 688 - 3 credit hours*

Practicum in Central Office Leadership and the Superintendency
(Summer semester)

* Additional $200 fee required

This practicum course builds upon field work experience required in precious course work and other prior administrative experience.

  • Students need 300 clock hours in central office administration.
  • Maintain a reflective journal of practicum experiences.
  • Instructor will meet with you at your school site.

Program Costs

The cost structure includes all fees and tuition.

  • $295 per credit hour / $885 per class
  • Practicum course LEAD 688 requires an additional $200.00 fee

Program Dates

Classes meet for four Saturdays each semester from 9:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. The Summer practicum does not require any class meetings at UCCS. Specific class dates will be determined before the start of each semester.
