Provides a comprehensive survey of ESL, bilingual and multicultural education programs for language minority students. Includes an overview of the history and legislation related to bilingual/ESL education. Presents various models, philosophies, and theoretical underpinnings of bilingual/ESL education. Discusses the culture of ESL classrooms, instructional strategies and important considerations for teaching the LEP student. (ESL Std. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5; PCT Std. 1, 3, 6)
Provides an in-depth study of curriculum options available for the bilingual/ESL classroom. Presents, reviews and critiques specific methods and strategies for teaching language minority students, as well as comparative methods of learning L1 and L2. Emphasizes methods for implementing cooperative leaning strategies among students, developing accommodation strategies for English Language Learners (ELLs) in content areas, and teaming with other professionals in the building to optimize instruction in the field. Gives students the opportunity to develop and present teaching units using ESL methodology as appropriate in classrooms. Presents current and emerging philosophies and methods on teaching reading to culturally diverse second language learners. Includes review of materials, strategies for teaching reading and writing skills, and important considerations for transference from L1 to L2 reading, and field-based assignments. Prepares teachers to assess and evaluate English as a second language students in a field-based setting. Includes particular assessment instruments, mediation strategies and materials, and formal and informal diagnostic strategies. A field-based, standards-based course that provides at least 150 hours of site-based work in addition to in-school work. Students are placed into classrooms with ELLs if they do not already have such classrooms. Instructors supervise the placements. Prereq., CURR 5700 Standards for PTELL: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.5, 2.2, 2.3, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 3.6, 4.1, 4.2
Presents a broad survey of second language acquisition research. Stresses theoretical concerns and research findings and practical applications to teaching second languages. Gives emphasis to applied second language acquisition, cultural awareness, and social and economic factors that contribute to ELLs' success in schools. The prerequisite for this course is Prereq., CURR 5704. The Colorado State Standards for PTELL: 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 2.1, 2.4, 3.4, 3.5, 4.1 and 4.2.
Focuses on models and strategies for improving parent and community involvement in the schools. Discusses administrative concerns, such as parent advisory councils, instructional concerns, such as helping children with school assignments, and family literacy issues and programs. Field-based assignments are required. No Prerequisites (ESL Std. 1a, 1b,1c, 1d, 2a, 2c, 5a, 5b, 5c, 5d, 5e, 5f, PCT Std. 1.4, 1.5, 6.1, 6.2, 7.3, 8.1, 8.2, 8.3)
This is a core course that provides an introduction to the study of language and linguistics, designed for teachers of culturally and linguistically diverse students. The course includes an overview of the components of language: phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. The course also includes discussion of how language is shaped by its users, covering topics such as language registers, dialects, and varieties. Throughout the course, students will explore the pedagogical implications of these fundamental components of language for teaching English Language Learners.

Master's in Curriculum and Instruction with emphasis in Linguistically Diverse Education (LDE) Endorsement (30 Total Hours)
Inservice teachers wishing to complete an Endorsement in Linguistically Different Learners at the Elementary Level and receive a Masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction - LDE emphasis will have to take the following courses in addition to those listed above in order to complete the degree. Each course builds on the next so you must take them in the order as they are listed.
Introduces measures of central tendency, variability, percentiles, standard scores and correlation. Basic concepts in statistical inference are covered. Evaluating and using research. Design and analysis of educational research, and completion of a minor research project. Standards for PTELL: 2.3, 2.4, 3.3, 3.6, 4.1
