Licensure Programs

The primary purpose of the graduate programs in Counseling and Human Services is to prepare counselors and other human services personnel to serve as competent school and community counselors, and to create specialized service in student.

School Counseling

The School Counseling Program is designed to prepare professionals for work as school counselors in elementary, middle, and high schools.

Community Counseling

The Community Counseling Program is designed to prepare professional for work in community settings such as counseling centers, agencies, business and industrial and private practice. Students receive preparation in working with individuals, groups, couples, families and organizations.

Note: The Student Affairs in Higher Education (SAHE) program is now being offered through the Leadership, Research, and Foundations Department.

Endorsement Programs

Post-Master's School Counselor Endorsement Program

This endorsement program is for those already holding a Master's Degree in Professional Counseling students and who currently possess a Masters degree in Professional Counseling.

Recent graduates of CACREP accredited master's degree programs in Professional Counseling may be permitted to enroll in the Post-Master's School Counselor Endorsement program. Upon successful completion of this program students will be recommended to the Colorado Department of Education for the School Counselor endorsement.

To qualify and apply for this highly selective program:

  1. There must be available openings in the School Counselor training program.
  2. Students must have a master's degree in Professional Counseling from a CACREP accredited graduate program. Graduates with other mental health degrees will not qualify for this program.
  3. The Master's degree must have been awarded within the last five years per University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Graduate School regulations.
  4. If the above criteria are met the applicant whould schedule a preliminary phone interview with the Chair, Department of Counseling and Human Services to confirm that all criteria are met and to discuss application procedures and required course work.
  5. Students must complete the full application process, meet all deadlines and be formally admitted in writing to the Endorsement Program.
  6. All admitted students must complete the Comprehensive Examination and Place Test prior to being recommended by the faculty for endorsement.
  7. The Endorsement program is completed over two academic years and operates in conjunction with the School Counselor master's degree program. Classes begin in the summer semester only.
  8. As a minimum, to receive school counselor endorsement, students must complete the Departmental Core sequence (COUN 501, 502, 510, 511, 512 and 513). In addition, students must complete the School Counseling Specialty Courses: COUN 580, 570 (2 semesters) as well as any other courses determined by the faculty.

Admissions

The new class begins the program in the following summer semester. Admission to the program is a selective process with enrollment limited to 27 qualified students in the day cohort and 27 students in the evening cohort. Students who accept admission to the program must be able to begin class work in the following semester. If this is not possible, admission may be deferred to the subsequent year.

Application Criteria

  1. Complete application forms for admission to the UCCS Graduate School.
  2. Obtain an application packet for the appropriate program from the COE offices and complete all required information. Send completed information to the CHS Department, College of Education Office.
  3. Schedule an information appointment with a faculty member. This appointment is to answer any questions you might have and clarify the procedure for admission to the program. Call 719-255-4104 to schedule an appointment.
  4. Have all previous transcripts sent to the CHS College of Education Office.
  5. Obtain four letters of recommendation from academic or professional sources.
  6. Take the Miller's Analogy Test (MAT) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Have the records sent to the CHS College of Education Office.
    Tests may be taken at the University Testing Services office, Student Success Help Center, Main Hall 324. (719) 255-3257.
  7. Mail all documents to:

Admissions Criteria

  • Criteria to be considered for admission to the Counseling Graduate Programs
  • Baccalaureate Degree
  • Undergraduate Grade Point average (GPA) of at least 2.75
  • Satisfactory GRE or MAT scores
  • References - academic and / or professional
  • Written communication skills
  • Ability to identify important personal characteristics as measured by the career goals statement and self-evaluation
  • Oral communication and personal qualities that are important for professional counselors as determined in the admissions interview and other application activities
  • Experience in counseling and human services and related positions, paid or unpaid
  • Congruence of fit between your career goals and the objectives of the program, as determined by the career goals statement and the admission interview
