PHILOSOPHY
General Information:
Philosophy
is the study of ideas that are fundamental, central, or exalted. A student of
philosophy seeks to understand principles that underpin all knowledge and
being.
In
Greek, the word "philosophy" means "love of wisdom",
Through the rise of universities and the separation of learning disciplines,
philosophy has taken on a more specialized meaning. Major philosophical
problems include: "What do we know?", "How do we know?", and "What is the
meaning of life?"
More
concretely, a philosophy major teaches analytical and critical thinking
skills, develops oral and written communication skills, and contributes to
interdisciplinary understanding. Skills developed help philosophy students to
excel in careers in law, medicine, management, education, government, writing,
computer science, psychology, sociology, and ministry among many others.
Philosophy majors consistently score in the top percentiles for all majors on
the GRE, LSAT, GMAT, MCAT, and other graduate and professional admissions
tests.
