Society for Creative
Anachronism
Background
Welcome
to the Society for
Creative Anachronism! (Or, SCA for short.) Anachronism means
something out of time. All of us 20th Century people dressing
and acting in an historical fashion are "out of time".
The SCA is dedicated to the study and recreation of the Middle
Ages. It is similar to the Civil War or Mountain Men historical
groups you may have seen. The difference is the focus of history.
Instead of restaging a Civil War battle, such as the Battle of
Gettysburg, or holding a trapper and trader rendezvous, we recreate
the tournaments, feasts, and most importantly, the ideals of the
Middle Ages. If you have been inspired by the legends of Camelot
or movies like Braveheart or the Three Musketeers, this could
be the hobby for you!
The SCA is an historical
group for amateurs. It is intended to be fun, yet, you still learn
a bit of history along the way. You dont have to be a scholar
to get involved. What you do have to do is make an attempt at
medieval clothing and attend a SCA event. Someone in most every
SCA group is available to help newcomers with cloths and those
first few events. There is no membership required to get started.
You can come see what the SCA is like. If later you decide you
want to become involved, a membership with the Society brings
benefits such as newsletters and discounts on event fees. And
membership with the Student Club connects you with others right
here on campus.
The
SCA started in the Bay Area of California in 1966 an has since
spread across the world. There are SCA groups from Australia through
the United States and Canada to Europe. There are 16 kingdoms
within the Society. New Mexico, eastern Colorado, and Eastern
Wyoming make up the 12th kingdom, the Kingdom of the Outlands. The local group in the Colorado
Springs, CO area is named the Barony of Dragonsspine. In addition, there are other nearby groups in Pueblo, Denver, Boulder, Fort
Collins, and Cheyenne. Members of the Barony of Dragonsspine can
provide contact information for other groups if you are not from
the Colorado Springs area and you wish to see more.
We
recreate all aspects of the Middle Ages. Two of the most eye-catching
aspects are the medieval cloths and the sword fighting, However,
this is just touches the surface. You do not have to get involved
with the fighting to be a part of the SCA. There is also cooking,
metal-working, leather-working, dancing, singing, brewing, calligraphy
and illumination, camping, royal courts, embroidery, archery,
weaving. . . The list goes on. In other words, there is a little
something for everyone. We are very hands-on. You learn by doing.
We invite you to come try your hand at medieval recreation!
