Accountability

It is recognized that required courses (General Biology, Cell Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry and Biology Seminar) and certain biology area requirements (Human Biology, Molecular/ Cellular/Developmental Biology, and Organismic/Environmental Biology) are needed for the development of competence in the Biological Sciences.

The major must take all required courses in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics, as well as at least one course in each of the three biology areas listed above. Students must earn a letter grade of C or above in these courses. The exiting Biology major should:
  • Be able to critically read, assess and discuss the biological literature.
  • Be able to access and synthesize information from a variety of scientific disciplines.
  • Be able to independently formulate hypotheses, to design and carry out rational tests of such hypotheses, and to interpret the results of such tests.
  • Be able to effectively compete in the job market and in professional and graduate schools.

Students must consult a faculty advisor in the Department for help in planning their individual programs.
