Prehistoric Field School

UCCS Archaeology Field School, 2004

The 2004 Archaeology Field School will be conducted at site 5EP2762, in Jimmy Camp Park, just east of Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs. The field school will run from June 7 until July 2, five days a week from 8:00 am until 4:30 pm. The first week will be a classroom session and the subsequent three weeks will be in the field. There will be an opportunity for a few selected students to continue digging at the site in a paid capacity for two additional weeks after July 2.

The investigations to be conducted during the 2004 field school will explore the area between the main site and the large burn feature. That feature will then be excavated in the two week session following the field school. Students will learn how to set up a grid system on the site, archaeological survey methods, and proper excavation and collection techniques. Working with a dig partner, each student will draw a topographical map of the site using either the plane table and alidade or the total station. For information, contact Bill Arbogast at warbogas@uccs.edu.

Jimmy Camp Creek

5EP2762 is a Developmental Period site that has previously yielded a large assemblage of prehistoric ceramics, chipped stone artifacts and groundstone, and buried fire pit features. Thirty seven square meters of the main area of the site were excavated in 1998 and 2002. Those excavations recovered charcoal from fire features that yielded a radiocarbon date of ca. AD 665. A larger burn feature located about 40 meters south of the main area of the site  is from a later occupation and yielded a radiocarbon date of ca. AD 1650; the latter feature may be the remains of a collapsed, burned, brush structure.
