Alumni Connections: College of Engineering and Applied Science, May 2011
We, the College of Engineering & Applied Science, recently signed a MOU agreement with India’s Global Connect Academy that will allow professionals in India to complete advanced courses in information assurance, the practice of managing risks related to the use, processing, storage, and transmission of information or data. A pilot program will begin this summer. The students will use a combination of course delivery methods to complete the same degree requirements and academic rigor as students enrolled in on-campus courses. The students in India will take courses taught online by UCCS faculty members in addition to enrolling in courses on-site by UCCS faculty or by lecturers hired by UCCS. We are proud to say that this new academic standard and model program is unique to Colorado and to UCCS. We foresee continued international collaboration and additional education efforts and expansion. To check out the upcoming pilot program schedule click here. To reflect on the past academic year as a whole we would like to remind you that our undergraduate enrollment was up 12.2% from fall 2009 to fall 2010 for the college. That we, EAS, are very proud to say we more than doubled our recruitment goal for our number of students’ for fall. And in Spring 2011 we would like to report again that Student Credit Hours were up by 19% compared to Spring 2010. UCCS undergraduate engineering program ranked 7th in the nation among public engineering schools offering bachelors and masters degrees in the 2011 edition of US News and World Report, “America’s Best Colleges.” EAS has two new Faculty members! Dr Michael Calvisi, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Dr Chuan Yue, Computer Science. We want to thank you for enduring with us as part of our community, college and commitment to excellence. Illuminate. Investigate. Innovate.
R. Dandapani, Dean CU Announces $1.5 Billion Fundraising Campaign
The university has raised more than $900 million since the silent phase of the campaign began in July 2006. Major fundraising campaigns typically conduct a silent phase to build momentum and engage key constituents. The public phase will continue until the goal is reached. During an outdoor ceremony, the Science & Engineering Building was renamed the Osborne Center for Science and Engineering. The ceremony featured comments by CU President Bruce Benson, UCCS Chancellor Pam Shockley-Zalabak and both Osbornes. But stealing the stage were youngsters from the Family Development Center who performed two songs and presented Mary Osborne with a bouquet. The Family Development Center is one of several campus units benefiting from the Osborne's generosity. (More) EAB Member of the Month: Dave Khaliqi
Before the Classical Academy, Dave lived and taught in South America, western rural Colorado, and Fort Collins, racking up twelve years in secondary science education, during which he also earned his MA in Geography and Environmental Studies at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. His primary passion in education is teaching students how to explore the natural world through scientific questioning, then to have fun answering those questions. From designing and building working hovercrafts to spending extended field trips in Rocky Mountain National Park, the point of Dave's teaching is to give students the opportunity to ask and answer the critical questions in science through inquiry and experimentation. Using these methods, Dave was awarded the Classical Academy Teacher of the Year in 2001, the Colorado Charter School Secondary Teacher of the Year in 2005, and a Rivers First Distinguished Environmental Educator award in 2006. Several awards and recognitions were made in support of this event and its participants. The participants were given the option of 5 different demonstrations with speakers from all around the US and some even video conferencing in from Brazil. The demonstrations showcased technologies including screen readers offered by the Office of Disability Services, games for the visually impaired, learning environments for the blind, and touch, sound, graphics, and aroma devices. With these types of conferences we hope to help drive the costs of these kinds of technologies down and create a more common awareness of new opportunities to create technologies to serve people with disabilities.
