Content Outlining (Ask these questions)

  • How important is the category or content on your website?
  • What are the objectives of each category of information?
  • Is this content of general or specific interest to your audience?
  • How should content or information or category be accessed? (should it be links to an external website, drop down links within the same document, or a link to another page?)
  • Should this information be on the "front" splash page, or buried deeper in the site?
  • Will the information change or remain static? If the information changes, how often will it change?
  • How will the categories be related? Are category names redundant? Can you consolidate some categories together? Where do the categories belong in the linking scheme?
  • Does the information belong in a subcategory of another section?

Identify priorities (Develop your website by priorities or you can get completely overwhelmed.) Break down the content into small chunks as in the examples below.

Priority 1 ex.

  • Welcome statement.
  • Department Logo, description, mission, address and phone number.
  • New link items.
  • Schedule of events.

Priority 2 ex.

  • FAQs
  • Tips and tricks
  • Helpsheets

Priority 3 ex.

  • Message board
  • Famous quotes
  • External Links.

These are juse examples. Break down your priorities any way that's suitable to you. The important message here is to identify what your priorities are, and how you will structure your priorities. Priorities also come in very handy if you are working in teams, and you want to have certain team members work on certain priorities.

Also helpful, Draw a storyboard, Flow chart, or web structure etc.

And remember, Without a clear logical structure, most websites will not function effectively.
