Food Service Advisory Board

February 19, 2003

3:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Members present: Jeff Davis, Sean Flaherty, Teresa Kinney, Tim Miller, Cris Neubacher, Janice Tharp, Samantha Villarreal, Ron Wisner.

Members absent:  Jackie Berning, Cyndi Deville, Kathy Griffith, George McDermith, Robert Wonnett.

Jeff Davis opened the meeting at 3:13 p.m. An agenda, FSAB By-Laws, and FSAB By-Laws revised were distributed.

FSAB By-Laws Changes.  Jeff asked that the members review the FSAB By-Laws.  After the members reviewed the FSAB By-Laws, Jeff noted the addition of a PESA member and an ex-officio member Director of Residence Life.  Jeff noted that these changes are due to the campus growth.  Teresa Kinney noted that there were not enough voting members present to vote and the issue will be placed on the next meeting's agenda for voting.

Food Service Contract Status.  Jeff noted that the contract is finally completed after negotiations between the University and Sodexho legal departments and is awaiting final signatures.  When the contract is signed Jeff will email the campus with changes to the contract:  the exclusivity clause, stating the non-exclusive space on campus, and that all state agencies must pay Sodexho within 45 days or be susceptible to interest charges on the amount.

Seattle's Best – Columbine.  Jeff noted that Seattle's Best was put into the Columbine Coffee Cart.  Tim noted that the change has met with great approval.  Ron Wisner asked if there was a difference in sales volume.  Tim noted that he would need to compare sales over the next month because he cannot accurately compare Winter break sales and in session Spring semester sales.

Jazzman's Breakfast Sandwiches.  Jeff noted that the breakfast sandwiches went on sale last Monday, February 17, 2003.  Tim noted that Sodexho finally received the specifications from Jazzman's for the breakfast sandwich recipes.  Tim described the sandwiches that are available and stated that a taste testing will be held for the new sandwiches soon.  Jeff noted that the sandwich he tried was very good and cost appropriate.  Tim noted that the prices range from $1.99 – $2.29 per sandwich.  Jan Tharp asked if the nutritional information is available about the new sandwiches.  Tim noted that nutritional information will be displayed once he receives it.

Status of Housing Village - Food Service Advisory Board.  Sean Flaherty noted that there is a Resident Hall Advisory meeting this evening and the formation of the HV-FSAB is on the agenda.  He will report on the progress at the next meeting.

Survey comments/questions.  Tim and Sean noted that the Housing Village survey, conducted at the end of Fall semester 2002, results were poor.  The Survey was administered during the same week a fruit fly/insect problem and a backup in sewer caused an odor problem in the Lodge.  Tim noted that Christy Jordan will be creating a report that will separate the factors during that week to better isolate the results of the survey.  Hopefully, this will better reflect how much of the negative responses were due to the odor and flies.  Tim noted that he will bring copies of the Sodexho survey, conducted in October 2002, to review the comments at the next meeting.

Teresa Kinney asked Tim whether students can request chicken patties at the Lodge grill.  She noted that requesting chicken patties was available in the past, but just recently this has been denied.  Tim stated that Sodexho corporate, in order to maintain food costs, has asked that requests for items that are not on special, not be done.  A discussion ensued.  Tim noted that in the past student requests were honored.  Jeff stated that he will email Tim a proposal to honor the student requests.  Tim will then submit the proposal to Sodexho corporate in order to facilitate the approval of student requests.

Teresa and Sean noted that several students/staff said that the pork dish served today at the Lodge was very good.  Tim discussed the Mystery Shopper program from Sodexho.  He noted that Sodexho corporate has stopped the program, but Tim felt that it was beneficial to the campus so he has Sodexho student workers do a Mystery Shop on the Lodge and Overlook.  Jeff suggested that a commuter student could be selected to shop the Lodge and a housing student could be selected to shop the Overlook in order to provide an unbiased opinion of both.  Tim made note of this suggestion.

Meeting adjourned at 3:38p.m.  The next FSAB meeting is to be announced.
