Operations and Initiatives

Auxiliary Services
UCCS Auxiliary Services mission is to build traditions and create exceptional experiences for our students, staff, faculty, alumni and the community.
High Performance Buildings
Our objective is a sustainable infrastructure with buildings that exemplify best practices with regard to sustainable development: materials, energy and water conservation, and occupant health, safety, and well-being. As well, our objective is to provide a sustainability living laboratory -- a learning experience above and beyond the classroom.
Climate
We are working to reduce our carbon emissions and incorporate sustainability into the curriculum to increase the ecological literacy of our graduates.
Energy
Equity
Diversity is central to the mission of the University of Colorado system and the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, affirming the importance of understanding our diverse experiences, traditions, and heritages.
Food
When the average item of food travels over 1200 miles from farm to plate and modern farming practices often include numerous toxic fertilizers and pesticides, food is a critical aspect of sustainability. Overall objectives in our Sustainability Strategic Plan provide for high quality nourishment for people on campus that is healthfully prepared, features organic and locally produced food, serves to educate the campus community about sustainable food choices, and produces minimal food and paper waste.
Purchasing
UCCS is committed to greening its purchases as much as it it possible. Below are some of the areas that we have initiated green purchasing policies, guidelines, or procedures. More information about UCCS' commitment as part of the University of Colorado system can be found here.
Transportation
Situated on a hill, with limited bus service and a large commuter population that works off campus, UCCS is challenged to change commuter habits to reduce its carbon footprint. The latest transportation survey shows that over 85% of students, faculty and staff drive to campus. However as one of the fastest growing campuses in the country, we have opportunities to carefully plan our transportation infrastructure to reduce vehicle use and encourage safe pedestrian and bicycle use.
Water
Colorado, with about 14" of precipitation each year, is classified as a high desert. The water we use is delivered and purified via a complex, energy-intensive system. Due to droughts, fire, salination, reduced snowpack and other reasons, our water supply is increasingly unpredictable and future water supplies will be increasingly more expensive to deliver. Therefore, it is imperative that we manage this precious resource as wisely as possible.
Waste/Recycling
As the world's population continues to increase, so too does the demand for finite resources. Recycling diverts waste from our landfills into facilities that can separate and process the waste so that it can be made into new products. Recycled products not only reduce the need for virgin materials, they also decrease the amount of energy used in production of products. Recycling is one of the easiest ways we can help reduce our impact on the planet.
