Student-faculty engagement is at the heart of the School of Public Affairs' culture. The average classes are small - for graduate classes 11 and for undergraduate classes 22 - a fact that fosters intense discussion and free exchange of diverse ideas.

At SPA students work with some of the most respected minds in public affairs- local as well as national. The School of Public Affairs' first Scholar-in-Residence was Colorado Attorney General John Suthers. Attorney General John Suthers' classroom offers scholarly rigor informed by a wealth of real-world practical understanding. In February 2009, Dr. Donald Klingner was named Distinguished Professor for "demonstrating outstanding performance in classroom teaching, research and service to the university and its affiliate institutions." In addition, the School of Public Affairs draws from the vast wealth of knowledge found in Colorado Springs nonprofit and public sectors. The City Manager, a Trustee and Vice President of the El Pomar Foundation, several staff of the Colorado Springs Police Department, to name but a few, have taught in the School of Public Affairs. Service is what the School of Public Affairs teaches and what it does.
