Students are notified of provisional status via their email acceptance letter sent by the graduate director. Students are admitted provisionally because they either have an undergraduate major in a field other than sociology or a student’s undergraduate record shows strong potential but the student struggled with core classes essential for successful completion of a graduate degree in Sociology at UCCS. Students who are admitted provisionally must complete SOC 5150 (Modern Social Theory) and SOC 5020 (Proseminar in Social Statistics) and these two courses must be taken prior to Graduate Theory (Soc 5160) or Research Methods (Soc 5070). Students are required to pass these courses with a B+ or better and are required to take these courses in the first semester. Failure to complete the provisional courses can affect status in the graduate program and/or extend a student’s graduation date.
