28-July Let the Games Begin: UCCS Sport Management Faculty Member Garret Klugh Meets First Lady Michelle Obama and reports on the Opening Ceremony
On Friday night we officially opened the Games of the XXX Olympiad. I started the day shuttling about 30 athletes to a private breakfast reception at our High Performance Training Center with First Lady Michelle Obama, Summer Sanders, Dominique Dawes and Grant Hill. I was fortunate to be able meet and speak briefly with Mrs. Obama during the event. She was great; inspirational and very generous with her time. She is a great ambassador for our Olympic Team.
Later in the afternoon men's basketball came to the High Performance Training Center to practice. Kobe and the guys were in good spirits. After practice they changed into their Opening Ceremony attire and were looking sharp in their Polo Ralph Lauren gear. The Opening Ceremony went off famously and Academy Award winning director Danny Boyle delivered a memorable show that I believe made all Britons proud. I was particularly impressed with the remarkably low-tech but movingly theatrical start of the show. I was in awe when the Olympic Rings were forged out of the "industrial revolution." A great start to what I'm sure will be a great Olympics.
