A Program of Distinction
In the fall of 2008 the College of Business at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs initiated a new undergraduate program in Sport Management. Building upon the college's highly successful PGA Golf Management program, the Sport Management program has already established some of the highest academic standards on the UCCS campus. Designed as a program of distinction, the Sport Management program limits admission to 43 freshman per year. Why 43? First off, that is the maximum number of students our classrooms hold - which means you won't be lost in a sea of other students. Second, we have intentionally limited the size of our program in order to insure that every student in our Sport Management program has the opportunity to engage in serious internship experiences. The bottom line is that by keeping our program small, our students receive the personal attention and internship experiences that are required to maximize opportunities for building successful careers in the field of sport management. Of course this also means that competition for these positions is keen. As a rule of thumb, students admitted to our program have high school GPAs of 3.3+ with ACT scores of 23+ and SAT scores of 1100+.
Location! Location! Location!
With unparalleled access to directors and managers of some of the most prestigious sports organization in the world, Colorado Springs arguably offers the best location in the country to pursue a degree in Sport Management. Located within our community are the headquarters of U.S. Olympic Committee and its adjoining training facilities as well as more than twenty national sports governing bodies including: USA Hockey, USA Volleyball, USA Basketball, USA Swimming, USA Wrestling, and many more. Colorado Springs is also home to the Sports Corporation - host of the State Games of America, the Sky Sox AAA baseball team, the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and Mountain West Conference, National Junior College Athletic Association, as well as major college sports programs including the Air Force Academy, Colorado College, and our own fast rising collegiate athletics program. Located an hour's drive north in Denver are seven highly successful professional teams including the Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, Colorado Rapids, Colorado Rockies, Colorado Mammoth, Colorado Crush and of course the Denver Broncos. And finally, Colorado Springs lies within easy driving distance of the country's best skiing, mountain biking, hiking, fly fishing, and rafting. It is the college's proximity to these organizations that gives us the ability to offer a sport management program like no other in the country.
Developing International Connections
With our emphasis on Olympic sports it makes sense that we would be interested in looking overseas for exciting international internship and educational opportunities. From Beijing - where one of our graduates now serves as a senior manager with the NBA China - to Great Britain - where we have worked with marketing managers and CEOs of top Premier League soccer clubs - we are making contacts and laying the groundwork for an expanded international experience for select students in our program.
