Science Engineering Buildings Construction Updates

April 2008 Topping off ceremony was held April 4th to put the highest piece of steel on the structure. UCCS staff and faculty were invited to sign the beam before it was placed into its final location. A pine tree and US flag were also placed atop the beam to signify future good luck with the building. The pine tree will be planted on the grounds of the completed building. Attendees of the ceremony were given a tour inside the construction zone to see how the bones of the building are coming along. Planning is underway for the furnishings and moves into the building; scheduled to occur in just over a year. The timeline page of this site will have more information as plans are finalized. Construction updates will be posted here.

February 2008 Structural steel has passed the half-way point and is 10 days behind
schedule, though Phipps still expects to make up the lost time by the end of March when erection is completed. SOG and deck topping (and MEP rough-in) are nearly finished at the west wing, with overhead rough-in to begin next week and deck work to shift to the east wing soon afterwards. Exterior wall studs and structural fire-proofing begin this week.

Resolution of user-directed changes and correction of drawing conflicts for power, tele-data and A/V systems are mostly complete (having stayed just a few days ahead of rough-in and concrete pours through the past four weeks).
Classroom lighting, motor control centers, Parking Lot 5 open-space design, furniture needs, and elevator hydraulics (oil separator/reservoir vs. biodegradable fluid) are among issues still to be settled.

September 2007 With agreement on a final Guaranteed Maximum Price, the scope of the new Science and Engineering Building is complete, leaving only about 14,000 square feet of research labs as shelled space (with reasonable hope that funding will be found in the coming months to complete that space, too).
New completion date for the total building, including all Bid Alternate areas, is March 30, 2009, allowing ample time for move-in and start-up before Fall Semester classes begin.

Phipps is signing up their remaining subcontractors; Kenny Electric is already working on-site, and Trautman & Shreve is ordering long-lead equipment and mobilizing in the field. Cast-in-place concrete foundations, cores and shear walls are 75% complete, and foundation drains, waterproofing and backfill are nearly half finished. Structural steel shop drawings are being reviewed, with steel deliveries scheduled to begin early-November and erection to start at core stairs. Significant design issues being considered at present include:

  • replacing Parking Lot 5 with landscaped open-space;
  • reconfiguring the west wall, changing some metal wall panels to face-brick and adding windows;
  • rearranging plasma display screens (and their functions) throughout the building;
  • revising IT/AV systems in the ISSS area to support video-conferencing; and
  • zoning of heating water supply and return piping to facilitate long-term O&M.

July 2007
Current project construction schedule shows completion in December 2008 but does not incorporate additional time that will be needed as add alternates are determined and agreed to after bid opening on August 7, 2007 at 4:00 pm.

We anticipate knowing by the week of August 20th what add alternates can be considered and added to the project scope of work. These add alternates will be reviewed by the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor and both College Deans.

Construction on site consists of concrete footing, foundation walls, grade beams and shear walls. Overall Foundation work is 38% complete. Midwest steel has provided embeds for concrete placements and is working on steel members for erection mobilization in November 2007. Stairs are expected to be on site and erected by November 19, 2007. Phipps is meeting with its structural steel erector this week to review and agree to final steel erection schedule and plan. This information will be provided to Martin and Martin for information purposes. Colorado Springs Utilities will commence work regarding primary electrical work the week of July 30. -Dana Squires Jacobs Engineering

October 2006 We will be installing a new storm water line. This will take place during the week of 2 Oct/06, it will cause the east side of lot # 5 to close for construction. I have been informed that room will be available on level 4 of the parking garage during this time. After the line is installed we will reopen lot # 5 for parking.

September 2006 Drawings revised and available for review to build both full wings on Science Engineering Building. See floor plans page for latest drawings.

August 10 2006 The contractor for the Sci/Eng project is placing the construction fence today, in this manner we will be prepared to make our new students aware of the construction zones for safety and security.

Architectual firm AR7 is currently working on development designs for both the interior, exterior and surrounding site for Science Engineering Complex.
