National Student Exchange At UCCS

Margie & Heidi

Margie, NSE Director

Margie: Where would you like to exchange to if you could do NSE now?

I think I would like to go to Guam. I have NO idea what the culture or the landscape is like, and I think if I were going to take advantage of an exchange opportunity, I would pick somewhere that is very unknown to me so I wouldn't have any pre-conceived notions about it or the people.

Did you meet the love of your life in college?

No, long after college. I was working as a recruiter for contract emergency rooms; he was a recruiter for design engineers. I had come back after many years away from Colorado. Funny how we meet people right in our own back yard, but never knew they were there.

Favorite Color?

It has changed throughout the years - first it was definitely BLUE; then it changed to GREEN; now it is gravitating toward PURPLE/PINK.

Would you ever skydive?

DEFINITELY!!

What’s your favorite vacation?

That's a tough one. We vacation at national parks around the country. ALL of them are beautiful! We usually camp for 10-12 days, hiking, biking, canoing, enjoying the beautiful scenery. I have been to 14 National Parks. Some of the most beautiful are right here in Colorado. We're very lucky to live here. What you like to do in your spare time? A: Camp, hike, bike (mountain and road), skateboard, read historical fiction, sew, garden, (hate to cook, but love to eat), write, create ANYTHING, talk to people, learn about places and people, and travel.

Where are you from?

Colorado Springs. I was born at Ft. Carson (my father was in the Army). I haven't lived here all my life, but most of it. We travelled to many states and Europe due to the Army, but we always came back to Colorado.

Special Hidden talents?

I don't really have any special talents, but I can TALK ALL DAY!!!

What was your major in college?

English Literature (undergrad); History (graduate school)

Any Famous People you’ve met or want to meet?

I've never met anyone famous. I would have liked to have met William Faulkner. I wonder if he would have been a good conversationalist?

Why you love Colorado?

I have always felt that I am part of the land in Colorado. I don't believe I am "native" to this land, because the first people (Utes) were here long before us, but I believe in their stories that we are part of the land we are born to. It is very comforting to know where you are and why you are here; to know you are part of it. I love to travel and find great pleasure and beauty in many places, but Colorado is where I know who I am.

Why you love NSE?

NSE is all about connecting with people in order to find out who YOU are. Whether you're young or old, inexperiences or an expert, people and the interaction between them is what and why we do as humans. NSE gives us such a chance to experience people and places that we might never have even thought about experiencing. I love the transformations that students go through while on exchange. They seem like infants again, experiencing life for the fist time. I feel very lucky that I can watch those experiences and the growth that inevitably comes with it. We have a VERY large program here at UCCS, and I feel that all these students' experiences are touching my life as well as their life. I couldn't ask for a better way to spend my life than helping others appreciate each other and what we have to offer each other. NSE lets everyone take a chance and see what is possible.
