In Model U.N., students step into the shoes of ambassadors from U.N. member states to debate current issues on the organization's vast agenda. Student "delegates" in Model U.N. prepare draft resolutions, plot strategy, negotiate with supporters and adversaries, resolve conflicts, and navigate the U.N.'s rules of procedures - all in the interest of mobilizing "international cooperation" to resolve problems that affect almost every country on Earth. Before playing out their ambassadorial roles in Model U.N., students research global problems to be addressed, drawn from today's headlines. Model U.N. participants learn how the international community acts on its concerns about topics including peace and security, human rights, the environment, food and hunger, economic development, and globalization. Model U.N. delegates also look closely at the needs, aspirations, and foreign policy of the countries they will represent at the event. The insights they gain from their exploration of history, geography, culture, economics and science contribute to the authenticity of the simulation once the actual role playing gets under way and ensures a lively and memorable experience.

P SC 453 Model United Nations prepares students for participation in the Model United Nations simulation. The course is taught by Dr. Patricia Keilbach. This advanced course is offered each Spring Semester and enrollment in the course requires the instructor's consent. The course provides a comprehensive background to the United Nations system and introduces students to the rules of procedure for diplomatic engagement. Dr. Keilbach leads a team of Model United Nations students to a conference each Spring Semester. The Model United Nations Club is active in recruiting new members, planning activities, and engaging in fundraising efforts aimed a garnering funds need to participate in a Model United Nations Conference and Simulation each Spring Semester.
