The Matrix advances research, curriculum, and faculty development examining the dynamics of oppression and privilege in the United States and around the globe. Our central focus is on the intersections of gender, race/ethnicity, and sexuality, as they interact with each other and with other dimensions of inequality. We strive to foster an intellectual climate that supports inclusion and collaboration among our faculty, students, and the community.

Sociologist Michael Kimmel is probably the leading researcher and writer on men and masculinity in the world today. The author or editor of more than twenty volumes, his books include Changing Men: New Directions in Research on Men and Masculinity (1987), Men Confront Pornography (1990), The Politics of Manhood (1996), The Gender of Desire (2005) and The History of Men (2005). His documentary history, Against the Tide: Pro-Feminist Men in the United States, 1776-1990 (Beacon, 1992), chronicled men who supported women’s equality since the founding of the country. His book, Manhood in America: A Cultural History (1996) was hailed as the definitive work on the subject. Kimmel also co-edited Privilege: A Reader (2003) with UCCS Professor Abby Ferber. His recent work addresses some of society’s most pressing issues, ranging from terrorism to school shootings, and their gendered dimensions.
Kimmel will talk about his newest book, Guyland, newly published by Harper Collins this fall.
A dynamic speaker, this is one talk you do not
