"The 'Culture of Poverty' and Other Myths That Harm Low-Income Families"
An exploration of the myths that too often guide conversations about class and poverty in schools and distract us from the real work of educational equity. Gorski will focus on developing a fuller understanding of class and poverty as they operate in the U.S. and its schools and what educators can do within their own spheres of influence to reject these myths and create equitable learning environments for low-income students.

Michael Kimmel
to Visit UCCS in November |
|
Sociologist Michael Kimmel is probably the leading researcher and writer on men and masculinity in the world today. The author or editor of more than twenty volumes, his books include Changing Men: New Directions in Research on Men and Masculinity (1987), Men Confront Pornography (1990), The Politics of Manhood (1996), The Gender of Desire (2005) and The History of Men (2005). His documentary history, Against the Tide: Pro-Feminist Men in the United States, 1776-1990 (Beacon, 1992), chronicled men who supported women’s equality since the founding of the country. His book, Manhood in America: A Cultural History (1996) was hailed as the definitive work on the subject. Kimmel also co-edited Privilege: A Reader (2003) with UCCS Professor Abby Ferber. His recent work addresses some of society’s most pressing issues, ranging from terrorism to school shootings, and their gendered dimensions.
Kimmel will talk about his newest book, Guyland, newly published by Harper Collins this fall.
