Who needs to take a Math Placement Test?
Many majors at UCCS require a math course that will require you to take the Math Placement Test. For a list of those majors and which math courses they require, CLICK HERE. If you don’t plan to major in one of these areas and you don’t plan to take a Math course numbered MATH 099 or above you do not need to take the Math Placement Test.
Students in (or considering) the following degree plans must take a Math Placement Test:
BI degrees Health Care Sciences including PreHealth Care Sciences
Biochemistry Mathematics
Biology Physics
Business including PreBusiness PreProfessional programs (premed, prevet, predent etc.)
Chemistry Psychology
Engineering including PreEngineering Secondary Education options in Biol, Chem, Math & Physics
NOTE: If you do not plan to major in one of these areas, a Math Placement Test is not required to complete your reasoning skills requirements, but can be used as an option. See your Academic Advisor for questions.
What if I’ve already taken a Math course at a different College?
If you are transferring Math course credits from another College (or if you took a course at UCCS) you do not have to take the placement test if the course was taken within the past 2 calendar years. If the course was taken over 2 years ago, you must take the Math Placement Test before registering for a Math course. If the course was taken at a different College please request a transcript from that institution and take it to the Academic Advising Main Hall 2nd Floor so that the transfer credits can be added to your UCCS record.
Transfer credit for College Algebra or higher – that is accepted by UCCS – is considered fulfilment of prerequisite requirements, and you do not need to complete a Math Placement Test. Please note that you must have earned a C or better for transfer courses to be accepted.
In order to receive credit for AP/IB/CLEP calculus tests, official scores must be received by UCCS. To determine the score needed to receive credit, please visit this website: http://www.uccs.edu/transfer/transfercreditadvising/creditbyexam.html. If the needed score to receive credit is not met, and your major requires the placement test, you will need to take the math placement test before registering for a math course.
How are my scores used?
Math Placement Tests are used to test into specific courses. For example, in order to take College Algebra MATH 1040, you must score a 50% or higher on the College Algebra Placement Test. Placing into a course does not grant credit for prerequisite courses. To determine the test(s) you should take, look at your major in the table of required math courses found here: http://www.uccs.edu/math/mptrequired.html
