Reserves are items which are designated for special class use. The Kraemer Family Library currently offers two types of Reserve services:
Items which may be placed on Print Reserve include:
Electronic reserve items are posted to you Blackboard course page. Items which may be placed on Electronic Reserve include:
As long as the item is a lawfully obtained copy (one that is owned by the Kraemer Family Library or the course instructor) there are no copyright restrictions when placing it on Course Reserve. Under no circumstances will an unlawfully acquired copy of an item be accepted for use. Items owned by other libraries, including those acquired through Prospector or Interlibrary Loan, may not be placed on Print Reserve
All articles and book selections submitted for Course Reserve must comply with the fair use guidelines (section 107) of the U.S. Copyright Law:
Notwithstanding the provisions of section 106, the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in a particular case is a fair use the factors considered shall include:
- the Purpose and Character of the use, including whether such a use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
- the Nature of the copyrighted work;
- the Amount and Substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole;
- the Effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.
The Kraemer Family Library reserves the right to refuse to provide access to any items which they feel falls outside the scope of fair use. The Electronic Reserve Manager will contact the instructor if any copyright conflicts are encountered.
If you have questions regarding copyright compliance please contact Carla Myers, Campus Copyright Specialist, at 255-3908 or cmyers8@uccs.edu.
By filling out a Print Reserve Request Form or a Electronic Reserve Request Form. Please review our Reserve Procedures before submitting your request.
Requests should be submitted at least one week prior to the date needed for class. Requests are usually processed within 24 hours but more time may be needed at the beginning of a semester. All requests are processed in the order received.
All Reserve materials are held at the Main Circulation Desk, which is near the west entrance of the library on the 2nd floor of the El Pomar Center. Your student should provide the desk attendant with the title of the item you want and they'll retrieve it for them.
Some instructors choose to place a personal copy of the course text on Reserve. The Library does occasionally purchase textbooks. You can also contact your Department's Subject Librarian to see if the Library owns a copy or to request that we purchase one.
