Safe Zone is a training designed to educate students, faculty, staff and community members about the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Safe Zone is an allies training that will explore terminology, the coming out process, gender identity and how to be a supportive ally of the LGBT community. This program creates a visible safe community on campus through the display of Safe Zone Stickers; you can earn yours by participating in the next Safe Zone training! Safe Zone training is approximately 2 hours long.
LGBT 101 is an introductory presentation providing basic information about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. The LGBT 101 presentation focuses on the experience of LGBT people on campus and how to interrupt homophobia and transphobia in a safe way. LGBT 101 is approximately 1 hour long.
Trans 101 is a presentation that focuses on the experience of those who identify as Transgender. The Trans 101 presentation focuses on gender identity as a concept separate from sexual orientation. This presentation explains how to use appropriate language when discussing gender and give participants the tools necessary to be inclusive of transgender individuals in their classrooms, clubs, residence halls and everyday lives. Trans 101 is approximately 1.5 hours long.
A Multicultural Affair
These once-a-semester gatherings are a celebration of diversity in all forms. Our first Multicultural Affair was held in September of 2013 and was a smash hit. The recorded attendance was almost double what was expected. Our next Affair will be held in February of 2014.
Coming Out Week
National Coming Out Week is the week of October 11th. We host a variety of events throughout the week, including Coming Out Stories, Drag 101, and a Guess Who's Gay panel. Over 250 people attended the events at during this year's coming out week celebrations, and we're hoping that next year is even bigger.
World AIDS Day
December 1st wasWorld AIDS Day. In 2012, we were fortunate enough to host 4 panels of the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt here at UCCS. This year we were able to get 4 panels again. They were displayed between Dec. 2 - Dec. 5. Our office always has events planned near that day, so make sure you watch the website for more info.
Religious Diversity Event
The LGBT Resource Center and M.O.S.A.I.C. are teaming up with The Center for Religious Diversity and Public Life at UCCS to present our first "Speed Dating with God" event. The event will be held in the University Center - more information will be forthcoming as the event nears.
Right now, there is one LGBT student club on campus, Spectrum. To get more involved on campus with Spectrum, you can check out their Facebook page, or their Mountain Lion Connect page.
M.O.S.A.I.C. offers a first-year mentorship program for minority freshmen. The LGBT Resource Center is participating in this program - just note that you would like to be paired on the basis of sexual identity or sexual orientation when you attend our mentorship orientation.
