Mareyllen was born in Waterbury, CT and was raised as a military child. She spent the majority of her childhood traveling from Air Force base to Air Force base, providing her with the exposure to different places and people - this sparked her interest in the social sciences at a young age. Maryellen got married at 19 and started a family. After her marriage failed, she was left to forge a new path for herself and her daughter. Maryellen went back to school and had a son. When Maryellen found out she was pregnant with her youngest daughter, she chose to push on as a full-time student, taking 18 credit hours the last semester of her pregnancy. She gave birth to her daughter the weekend before finals managed to earn a 4.0 while also balancing the demands of her other children and a part-time job. The following semester, Maryellen was accepted at UCCS. This May, she will earn a degree in History with an emphasis in Secondary Education where she will be able to teach students in grades 6-12 the disciplines of history, civics, geography, economics, psychology, and sociology. Maryellen is thankful for the support and opportunity to improve herself and hopes she will be able to help others improve themselves in the future.
