About the 2017 Unstoppable Woman, Dr. Barbara Swaby
"My commitment to community service is total. I view it as a personal mandate, a valued opportunity, and a way to show gratitude for the space I occupy on earth."
~ Dr. Barbara Swaby
UCCS Professor Emerita Dr. Barbara Swaby has served the literacy needs of the Colorado Springs community and beyond for more than thirty-five years. When she was not in the classroom or in the field with graduate students teaching effective reading instruction, writing curricula, authoring books, or serving as Director of the Graduate Teaching Program and Teaching Clinics at UCCS, Dr. Swaby evaluated the reading needs of roughly 500 children a year from our community and beyond and provided valuable counseling to families desperate to improve their children's performance.
As a Professor of Education and President's Teaching Scholar Honoree, her passion for literacy and the rescuing the futures of struggling readers was easily ignited in her graduate students, enabling Dr. Swaby's work to expand well beyond her reach.
Dr. Swaby is known for the Literacy for All Children program - the LOGO project. LOGO stands for Literacy On the Go and began when children displaced from Hurricane Katrina relocated to our region. Dr. Swaby pulled together backpacks filled with books for these children who had nothing. Soon, Dr. Swaby realized that there were children right here in Colorado Springs who did not have access to books, and her program expanded without bounds. The LOGO Program has collected and distributed over 170,000 books to our community!
Chancellor Emerita Pam Shockley-Zalabak nominated Dr. Barbara Swaby to be this year's Unstoppable Woman with great admiration of her lifetime of service to education. Dr. Swaby's commitment to not just children's literacy in Colorado Springs, but to the world makes Dr. Barbara Swaby a role model and a truly Unstoppable Woman.
