We will be providing a PDF of this article and future articles. These articles are provided the University of Colorado Office of Information Security. - Telecommuting
You may have seen this box pop-up before. It will show up in the lower right hand corner of your Windows screen if you have a virus. If you see this box, please click "Clean Computer" immediately. If you see this box repeatedly, then there is something wrong with the virus removal and you should call the UCCS IT Help Desk at x3536. There have been several incidents in the past few months where viruses have been downloaded to a computer and the virus starts to steal information. If you see the box, stop what you are doing and click "Clean Computer". Data security is everyone's responsibility.
Physical laptop security
Is your laptop shared with multiple people or easily accessible in a high traffic area? Lock it up when it's not in use. Locking your laptop up in a drawer or closet when not in use helps to not only keep it safe while you are away, it also helps if the laptop is visible in high traffic or public areas from being seen. If your laptop is connected to a docking station or you don't have a drawer or closet, consider a laptop cable lock. These are inexpensive and can be purchased through the CU Marketplace.
Update on New Operating Systems for Mac and Windows
In June we mentioned that both Apple and Microsoft were releasing new versions of their Operating Systems.
Windows 8 for PC's - We have been testing this for just over a month now with mixed results so far. Microsoft is gearing this operating system to be a touch interface that will look and feel the same regardless if you are on a phone, tablet or computer. This makes for a very different look and feel from Windows 7. In the coming weeks we will be offering Windows 8 as a Beta test only for those that are interested.
Mountain Lion for Mac's - Testing for Mountain Lion has gone slower than expected, Due to Apples licensing structure we do not recieve Mountain Lion until weeks after it has been released to the general public. If you are eager to upgrade to Mountain Lion it can be purchased for $19.99 from the App Store. Please keep in mind that we only be able to provide very limited support if you choose to upgrade and are still testing this product. We will be offering this to the campus as soon as it has been tested.
