All students applying to UCCS whose native language is not English must demonstrate their English language proficiency through one of the following three means before they are able to enroll in classes at the university:

English Language Proficiency Requirements

- TOEFL: Students must receive a minimum score of 80 on the iBT or 550 on the paper-based exam within the past two years. (UCCS code: 4874)
|
- IELTS: Students must receive a minimum score of 6.0 within the past two years.
|
- ACT/Compass Exam: UCCS Intensive English Program students must receive a minimum score of 270.
|
Students are exempt from submitting one of the above test scores if they meet any of the following conditions:

English Language Proficiency Exemptions
|
- Completion of a UCCS-approved English language program, Language Consultants International or ELS Language Center, and receiving the approved scores.
|
- Completion of English Composition I and II at a regionally-accredited post-secondary U.S. institution with a 'C' grade or better.
|
- Citizen of a country whose first/official language and the language of instruction are English and has completed all secondary or post-secondary schooling in that country.
|
- ACT English sub-score of 18 or better.
|
- SAT verbal score or 430 or better.
