Introduction to the Jiangsu Province Higher Education Faculty
Summer Training Program

The University of Colorado Colorado Springs and surrounding community were pleased to extend an official welcome to the faculty delegation of Jiangsu Province, China, who attended a professional development program taking place during summer session 2013. The sixty faculty participants began their period of study on 30 May 2013 and concluded their work on 17 August 2013. They then continued their journey across the United States participating in cultural tours and school visits until returning to China on 30 August 2013.

With support from the Office of the Director General of Jiangsu Education Association for International Exchange, Nanjing, Jiangsu, China, the goals of this customized training program were three-fold:

  1. To enhance English language skills;
  2. To learn new pedagogical theory and practice; and
  3. To gain personal experience of American culture.

The United Education Alliance (UEA) of California was appointed by the Jiangsu Education Association for International Exchange under the Ministry of Education of Jiangsu Province to design and implement professional and cultural programs abroad for educators. Together with the UEA as our partner we designed a program to meet these goals. Activities at UCCS and the surrounding community involved workshops on educational technology, counseling, special education, curriculum design, and the American higher education system, classroom observations; ESL classes; one-on-one meetings with UCCS faculty members; small group interactions with administration: cultural activities; and much more.  To view the full schedule from 30 May to 17 August 2013, please click here.

Information shared with the UCCS community
concerning how they could be involved

 1)  Faculty-matching program:  Jiangsu Visiting Faculty

As part of their experience at UCCS, the Chinese faculty members also hope to observe some classes and meet with UCCS faculty once or twice during their stay. They are interested in learning more about the research that is being done in their fields and how the similar programs differ between countries. With that said, we are looking for faculty members that would be interested in meeting informally with these Chinese faculty members during their time at UCCS. This will be a wonderful opportunity for international collaboration and possible partnerships.

2) The 'A Day in American Life' activity:

The faculty members also hope to be introduced to life in the United States. To this end, we have scheduled an event, A Day in American Life, for Saturday, 22 June. For this day, the Chinese faculty members will be matched with a UCCS faculty or staff member so that the visitors will be able to experience a typical Saturday in Colorado Springs. With that said we are currently looking for volunteers. You are not expected to take them on a sight-seeing excursion, as that is already a part of the 11-week program, but to allow them to join you on your typical Saturday activities. This can include going to Home Depot to pick up a few things, taking a hike on a favorite trail, or simply going to your home for lunch. The Chinese faculty members are truly interested in getting to know you, visiting an American home and seeing how you live day to day. The Office of International Affairs is looking for 30-40 volunteers who would be willing to spend one Saturday with one or two of the visiting Chinese faculty members.
