Dallas and New York-based artist Jay Shinn creates transcendent works out of light, paint, metal and neon that defy our notions of space and perception. Blurring the boundaries between sculpture, painting, and installation art, Shinn explores geometric forms and configurations in sublime fashion. Jay Shinn has exhibited extensively on an international level - GOCA is thrilled to host his first solo exhibition in Colorado.
The public is invited to a reception for Shinn's first solo exhibition in Colorado, 5-9pm on Friday, October 5, 2012. Jay Shinn will give a public gallery talk at 5:30 pm, illuminating his process and speaking about the works created during his residency.
With ties to art movements such as "Op-Art", geometric abstraction, color-field painting and light & space artists, the works in ILLUMINATED invite viewers to expand their perception. A lush lexicon of colors and form abound in this work, transcending description and begging to be experienced in person for full appreciation. Shinn deftly handles his materials, transforming house paint, neon, projected light, plexiglass, and spray paint into singular spatial experiences.
Jay Shinn was born in Magnolia, Arkansas and undertook formal studies at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, the Memphis College of Art and the Kansas City Art Institute (BFA, 1982). Shinn has completed residencies in Berlin, Germany, Ghent, New York and at the Vermont Studio Center, among others. He has exhibited extensively - recent notable exhibits include "Centerfolds" at the Marty Walker Gallery in Dallas, Texas (solo exhibition - 2011), "Luxplus" at Kunstverein Neukölln and "A Twisted Mind was Left Alone" at Stunden 48 Galleries in Berlin, Germany (both two-person exhibits - 2011). Shinn's work is in multiple collections including DFW Airport, Microsoft Corporation, The State Department (Washington, D.C.) and Hilton Hotels (Texas). Jay Shinn is represented by Marty Walker Gallery in Dallas, Texas.
